FAQs / What to Expect
Where are you located?
I live in Portland, Oregon where I work with clients both locally and nationally. I work from an office building behind my home - it is separate and private and is likely very different from other financial offices you have been to!
If I do not live near you, how does a long distance appointment work?
I work with many clients by phone; in fact even some local clients find this the most convenient way to work with me. We will use a screen-sharing tool that enables us to view the practical aspect of the work simultaneously. Internet access and a comfort with computers will be essential.
How long does this process take?
This is a process designed for lasting change – not a quick fix. The work unfolds in a sequence of specific steps but at a pace tailored to you. I find that there is a natural arc of this work that spans over 6-9 months, but there is individual variation within that norm. When we feel your process is complete we may meet quarterly, yearly, or before and during critical life stages that require additional support – purchasing a home, the birth of a child, increase or decrease in income, adjusting to retirement, etc.
When you say tools will be used, what do you mean?
We will use tracking software that is specifically designed to bring consciousness to financial management while acknowledging the emotional side of the equation. Within the system are monthly and annual plans, worksheets, net worth statements, and additional tools that round out your financial landscape all in one place.
I am a small business owner but I don’t know if I should focus on my personal or business?
We will discuss this in our initial appointment. Typically business owners like to first focus on their personal finances and then apply a similar approach to their business when they feel ready.
Can you help me consolidate my debt - student loans and credit cards?
While debt is a core topic in our work, our focus would be on debt prevention, sustainable debt repayment and debt management. It is important that you recognize that I am not a credit counselor. The complexity of student loans require more specialized attention and the service of debt consolidation is not what I offer. I have several sources that I recommend to my clients depending on their specific needs. If you are in need of immediate and free assistance, Debtor's Anonymous is a wonderful resource.
Can you advise me on where to invest my money or how much I will need for retirement?
I am not a financial planner or a financial advisor. There are many wonderful advisors and planners who specialize in these areas, and I regularly refer my clients to these people when they are ready, or work with clients in tandem with an advisor. The service I provide addresses a different aspect of this process, and is focused on providing practical and emotional support to help you achieve an empowered relationship with your money. All financial service providers (Accountants, Financial Planners, Financial Advisors, Lenders, etc.) are beneficial depending on your needs at different times in your life. If you aren't sure about what it is you need, I am happy to help you determine the best fit for you at this time. You can also search NAPFA.org to find a fee-only advisor in your area.
